South Carolina has a new law against human trafficking and a new Human Trafficking Task Force that will make sure that new law gets put to use.At its first meeting, the task force came up with three action items.
- Develop a protocol for what law enforcement or agencies should do when they come across a possible case of human trafficking.
- Develop a plan for training law enforcement and prosecutors to know how to recognize and handle human trafficking.
- Have all state agencies, and the non-government organizations that deal with trafficking victims, go through their policies and procedures to find any stumbling blocks, like patient confidentiality rules, that prevent them from working together and sharing information.
- Promote statewide the national toll-free number to report human trafficking, 1-888-3737-888.
